Everyone has heard of Hollywood, CA, home of the movie stars. But Long Branch was the first Hollywood! In 1882, John Hoey created his famous gardens. He and his wife, avid gardeners, loved all the Holly trees that were native to the area. They named their gardens ‘Hollywood”.

1896 Handicap Bicycle Race for Ladies. The note at right says: "Bicycle races were popular all over the country in the 1890's. Professional cyclists came to Long Branch, and handicap races were arranged. The races started at the West End Hotel and ended at the Hollywood Show Grounds. Anna Held (an actress) won a race and also a prize for the most attractive costume."
